PURPOSE:To make the responding speed of an electrochromic (EC) display device higher by adding a supporting electrolyte which enhances the conductivity of a soln. and does not take part in color developing and vanishing reactions and a proton donor to a nonaqueous solvent to prepare an electrolytic soln. for the EC display device. CONSTITUTION:A transparent electrode 2 and an EC layer 3 of WO3 or the like are formed on a glass substrate 1, the layer 3 is faced to a counter electrode 5 on a counter substrate 4, and an electrolytic soln. 8 is sealed in the intermediate part to form an EC dislay device. The soln. 8 is prepared by adding a supporting electrolyte which enhances the conductivity of a soln. and does not take part in color developing and vanishing reactions such as quat. alkylammonium perchlorate having a large ionic radius to an aprotic nonaqueous solvent such as propylene carbonate and by further adding a proton donor which takes part in color developing and vanishing reactions such as H2SO4. The soln. 8 gives a high responding speed in display under applied voltage, and the display function is improved furthermore. |
