A single board computer system includes a primary computer (10) and a service computer (30), connected to the primary computer through a local bus (20). The service computer serves to relieve the primary of auxiliary functions and to enhance the system by performing system self-test, timing, intelligent watchdog monitor, intelligent serial I/O user interface, real-time monitoring of data contained in the system, and system configuration. Operator interaction with the primary computer is afforded with insignificant interruption to the real-time behavior of the primary computer.
