A current-type inverter having a bridge circuit which converts d.c. power into a.c. power of a desired frequency, the d.c. power being supplied from a variable d.c. power source (12) to an induction motor (16) via a reactor (10) which works to smooth the electric current. The bridge circuit comprises gate-turn off diodes (18...28) which are rendered conductive or non-conductive responsive to signals fed to control electrodes thereof. The d.c. terminals of the bridge circuit are connected to the variable d.c. power source (12) and the reactor (10), and capacitors (30...34) are connected across the a.c. terminals of the bridge circuit.
