A clock transmitter synchronised to the running of the motor of a stepping motor supplies a clock pulse for each motor step, which clock pulse is used to initiate the winding drive pulses for the respectively next motor step. The time interval between the successive clock pulses and the number of clock pulses are determined and stored during the entire acceleration phase. During the braking phase, the stored time intervals are taken from the store in the reverse sequence and the motor windings are driven at these intervals until the stepping motor has moved to the desired position.
