The invention relates to 2,4,6-trihalogenated 3-carbamoylphenoxycarboxylic acids of the general formula I in which Hal is a chlorine, bromine or iodine atom, R<1> is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and k = 0; 2 to 4, l = 0 or 1 and m = 0; 1 to 4, with the proviso that l = 0 when k = 0, and their salts with inorganic bases. The compounds of the formula I and their salts with inorganic bases have an extraordinarily high sweetening power and are outstandingly suitable as sweeteners (sweetening agents).
