Apparatus for treating plastic counting bottles containing radioactive liquids by separating the radioactive content of the counting bottles from their plastic component parts. The counting bottles are fed via an agitating magazine to a cutting unit, by which they are cut up into chips of plastic. The radioactive content of the bottles discharged during this drips off into a collecting vessel through a screen, over which the chips of plastic slide into a screening container. The chips of plastic collected in the screening container are washed and, after dripping off, can be removed from the apparatus as a "slightly radioactive" solids fraction. The low radioactive washing liquid is collected separately from this.
