[Also in Divisions B2 and B5] A separable fastening element of the type consisting of flexible sheet material having on one surface a very large number of closely spaced pile-like protuberances 20 adapted to engage protuberances of another member, comprises a base sheet of porous fabric 11 woven from fuzzy yarns impregnated with a strong flexible springy plastics material which has been forced through the openings in the fabric to form the protuberances as integral combinations of the plastics material extending through the openings in the fabrics each of the protuberances having fibres extending thereinto from said fuzzy yarns to re-inforce the roots of the protuberances. In the construction shown the base sheet consists of porous woven cotton fabric and the plastics material is nylon. The element is made in the apparatus shown in figure 5 which has a plurality of separate mould-forming plates 38 assembled to form a block of plates in a box 40, the plates being pressed together by a screw 44 the plates 38 have complementary recesses which define the cavities for forming the protuberances. The plastics material is forced through apiece of the fabric laid across the top surfaces of the plates by means of a nozzle 62, Fig. 7, having an elongated orifice 66. The nozzle has lips 72 which smooth the plastics material level with the upper surface of the yarns from which the fabrc is made. |
