The road salt described comprises a readily soluble and a sparingly soluble component, namely 50 - 90 % by weight, preferably 75 - 90 % by weight, of calcium carbonate and 10 - 50 % by weight, preferably 10 - 25 % by weight, of calcium chloride. It is prepared by the action of aqueous and/or gaseous hydrochloric acid on granular calcium carbonate by means of a calcium chloride solution.
