The precoated filter (1; 105; 123) filters especially liquids from sugar production. A shaft (11) with plate-shaped filter elements (17) fixed thereto is mounted in a pressure vessel (2). In precoat filtration, the filter elements (17) are precoated with a filter cake which consists of a filter aid and is used in the subsequent process filtration. An internal support chamber (33) of each filter element (17) is connected via a hollow space (38) of the shaft (11) to the outside of the pressure vessel (2). The pressure vessel (2) is provided with an assembly port (3) for the insertion and removal of filter elements (17). A longitudinal axis (12) of the shaft (11) encloses an angle (122) with the horizontal, which is smaller than 90 DEG and in the limiting case is zero. The filter elements (17) are arranged in at least one stack (18, 19; 106 to 109; 125, 126) each behind one another, one longitudinal axis (24, 25, 118 to 121; 129, 130) of each stack enclosing with the longitudinal axis (12) of the shaft (11) an angle (62) which is greater than zero and in the limiting case is 90 DEG . The filter elements (17) can form stack pairs (32; 116; 117) located on opposite sides of the shaft (11). Guide tubes (28, 29; 110 to 113; 127, 128) fixed to the shaft (11) can guide the filter elements (17) in an advantageous manner. The shaft (11) can have an interruption bridged by a frame (124), at least one stack (125, 126) of the filter elements (17) being held by opposite longitudinal pieces (134, 142) of the frame (124) mutually connected by transverse pieces (140, 141). <IMAGE>
