PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber which is highly resistant to radiations, is light in weight and is inexpensive by providing a shielding layer consisting of a metal having >=50Angstrom wavelength of the characteristic X-rays of K systems on the optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:A shielding layer 2 is provided on the outer side of an optical fiber strand 1 consisting essentially of SiO2 and a buffer layer 3 formed of silicone rubber or the like is provided on the outer side thereof. The layer 2 consists of a metal having >=50Angstrom wavelength of the caracteristic X-rays of K systems such as Be, B and is formed to 0.01-1.0mum thickness by a sputtering method or the like. When beta rays and gamma rays of high energy are irradiated to such metallic layer 2, the radiations are absorbed and long wavelength X-rays are generated but the strand 1 does not deteriorate. Thus the optical fiber which is highly resistant to radiations, is light in weight and is inexpensive is obtained. |
