A ship's stern 10 (which may be of cruiser type as in Fig. 1, not shown, or have a transom 30 as in Fig. 2) has a pair of shafts (in bosses 29) spaced equidistantly from the central longitudinal vertical plane of the ship on which are mounted propellers 25 to operate in the viscous wake-belt of the ship, the spacing and diameter of the propellers being such that each overlaps the induced velocity field of the other. The propeller blades may be shaped to avoid interference and the blades may rotate in the same or in opposite directions in the same plane or in longitudinally spaced closely adjacent planes. |
