In this method, the heat is removed from the heated steel strip by radiant heat exchange. In order to achieve a particularly economical and simple process for the controlled cooling of a heated steel strip, radiant heat exchange with the heated steel strip is carried out with cooled corresponding walls, the absorption of radiant heat of which can be varied in such a way that control of the strip temperature characteristic is possible. The apparatus for carrying out the method is constructed as follows: radiation walls (2, 3) are arranged at relatively short distances from the steel strip (1), on both sides of the latter, in a cooling furnace, the outsides (4, 5) of the radiation walls (2, 3) facing the steel strip (1) having a high unit conductance and different parts of these outsides (4, 5) being coverable in a controlled manner by means of movable plates or webs with a very low unit conductance. <IMAGE>
