Method for positioning equipment carriers (M) which transport test, measurement and/or processing equipment, can be moved on the inner wall of hollow bodies such as, in particular, pipelines or containers, and are invisible from outside. The equipment carrier (M), which transmits an acoustic signal at a first reference point (S) on the hollow body wall (R) with the aid of a sound generator (6) or receives it there with the aid of a sound pick-up (9, 9'), is displaced axially and in the circumferential direction relative to at least one sound pick-up or generator (9, 9' or 6) that is secured fixed in the desired target position at a second reference point (E) on the outer wall of the hollow body (R) until the received acoustic signal reaches its maximum value. The device for carrying out the method has an electrodynamic generator (6) with a periodically moving metal pin (6a) which knocks against the wall, as well as an ultrasonic receiving head and the associated transmitting and receiving circuitry. <IMAGE>
