The invention provides a spacing device for use in supporting reinforcing steel in the casting of concrete, comprising a hollow body having a cylindrical fixing portion 1 and a conical portion 2 with rounded apex 3, the body being formed of a foamed thermo-plastic material so that when the cylindrical portion 1 of the spacing member is pressed against a portion of a reinforcing steel network which has been preheated the material will melt and expand so that it covers that part of the network which penetrates into the fixing portion.
