Digital broadband communications system

The invention relates to a digital broadband communications system in which a central station (I) is connected via optical fibres (II) to subscriber stations (III). The latter can receive television and audio programmes, can receive and transmit videotelephony and telephony signals and can transmit back-channel signals. According to the invention, an internal television signal with accompanying stereo sound with a bit rate of 34816 Mbit/s is converted in a converter (19) into a standard bit rate of 38368 Mbit/s and a pulse frame according to CCITT Rec. G.751. It is thus possible to transmit the internal television signals externally via a long-distance path at the standard bit rate. <IMAGE>
