The invention relates to a yarn breaker on a spinning and twisting machine, which is arranged between a drawing unit and a spindle at the joining point of two slivers running out of the drawing unit at a distance from one another, is mounted on the machine frame and has two fingers, between which the finished yarn runs through. The yarn breaker can be used on machines with a vertical yarn run and on machines with an inclined yarn run and is so designed that it can be moved into and out of the running region of the finished yarn (7) or can follow this running region exactly. This movement can take place by pivoting about an axis or by horizontal displacement. There is also the possibility of pivoting a plurality of yarn breakers jointly. Whilst, in machines with a vertical yarn run, the yarn breaker (3) is pivotable between two end positions, in machines with an inclined yarn run there is the possibility of bringing about a continuous shift of the yarn breaker according to the variable position of the yarn-guide members. <IMAGE>
