PURPOSE:To attain compression with high efficiency, by performing encoding of one dimension together with two-dimension encoding, comparing the length of code trains obtained respectively and selecting the shorter code train as a compression data of an encoded line. CONSTITUTION:A picture signal converted at an A/D converter is inputted to an input buffer 1 storing a multilevel picture data for one page's share or prescribed lines' share. An encoder 2 encodes the data for two-dimension in the line unit and an encoder 3 performs one-dimention encoding. Code trains C0, C1 outputted from the encoders are respectively given to one-line buffers 6, 7 for tentative storage. Further, the trains C0, C1 are also inputted to counters 4, 5, where the respective code length (C0, C1) is counted. In finishing encoding of each line, a comparator 8 compares the length of the code trains C0, C1 and the code train having the shorter code length is selected at a selector 9. |
