Process for preparing novel benzocycloheptene derivatives

The preparation of novel benzocycloheptene derivatives of the formula I, <IMAGE> in which R1 to R4 and Z have the meaning given in the description, is described. The process is based on the replacement of the cyano group in the corresponding aminonitrile compounds by a group Z using a Grignard reaction. The compounds of the formula I exhibit antidepressant and psychostimulatory properties.
