A machining program memory (7) is provided for storing machining programs (PRO) for the two tool rests of a quadriaxial numerical control lathe separately and independently from each other in the form of predetermined machining units. A machining time is computed for each of the predetermined machining units stored in the memory and is displayed on the display device (5) as a time chart for each tool rest. The two time charts are then compared by observing the display device in order to determine whether the operating efficiency of the two tool rests can be increased and if so the machining programs (PRO) are amended accordingly.
