An exterior rearview mirror comprises a base (2) attached to a body panel (1) of a vehicle and a housing (5) containing a mirror (6). A lateral connecting arm (7) is attached to the housing and includes a socket (9) forming a ball joint with a ball (8) carried by the base (2). The ball joint and the lateral connecting arm are protected by a sleeve (10) of which one end (11) is attached to the base and of which the other end (13) is left free inside an annular recess (14) in the housing (5).
