The invention relates to a circuit arrangement for a telecommunication switching system, in particular a telephone PBX having a central controller, the object of the invention being to prevent overloading of the central controller. This is achieved by arranging that the peripheral devices register that a message to the controller has been started and simultaneously a timer is engaged which determines the maximum time required by the central controller to process this message. When a further criterion arrives before the central controller has responded or after the timer has timed out, the peripheral device is brought into a defined state.
