A multi-purpose device, in particular a picking-up device for tennis balls, in which the receiving tube is fitted by hand onto the handle (23) vertically above the tennis ball and pressed downwards onto the ground. The picking-up mechanism, consisting of 18-22/sheet 4, is mounted on the bottom of the receiving tube 2/sheet 2 in a three-fold arrangement offset by 120 DEG . The function of the ball pick-up is illustrated by the radii 1-4/sheet 4. The three catching levers (19) are moved upwards when the catching tube is placed on the ball, a counter pressure being produced by the three torsion springs (20) on the catch levers (19) until the torsion springs (20) located on the axle (21) allow the catch levers (19) to spring back into their starting position when the ball has passed through. <IMAGE>
