In a vacuum cleaner in which water and dust is drawn through a downwardly inclined inlet 11 so as to give a rotary cyclone effect to separate the large dust particles and water in a tank, the dust passing through an opening of a bowl or disc-shaped valve member 14 and seat 13, actuated by a float 32, and an opening 17 through a duct 18 into a dust filter 20, and through a motor unit comprising a plurality of fan motors 22 located below the tank the arrangement is such that valve member 14 is moved on to a second seat 33 by the air-flow passing through the valve 14, 13 when the air contains a predetermined quantity of impurities such as dust, foam or water in order to close the connection between the tank and the motors 22. Distance members 34 are provided between member 14 and seat 13.
