1,247,609. Reticulating cellular polymers. FMC CORP. 7 Nov., 1969 [29 Jan., 1969], No. 54577/69. Headings C3C, C3P and C3R. Cellular polymers having a network of interconnected strands and cell membranes are reticulated by applying water to at least one surface area portion of such polymers, heating the wet portion to at least 100‹ C. to convert the water to steam and preventing the escape of the steam from along at least the one heated portion but not all the surface area of the polymer, thereby obtained a reticulated polymer. The polymer may be polypropylene, polyethylene, polyvinylchloride, polystyrene, polyester or a polyurethane. In Fig. 1 a foamed and stretched web 7, e.g. of polypropylene, is passed over rollers through a tank 17 of water 15 containing a wetting agent, and then over metal rolls 19, 21 and 23, heated to at least 100‹ C., each roll being turned at a faster speed than the preceding roll, and is collected over 31.
