The invention relates to compounds of the formula wherein R1 is n-pentyl, 2-methylbutyl, 3-methylbutyl, 2,2-dimethylpropyl, cyclopropyl, cyclobutyl, cyclopentyl or cyclohexylmethyl. The compounds are useful intermediates in the preparation of certain novel 3-substituted-3,7-dihydro-1H-purine-2,6-dione compounds which display activity against chronic obstructive airway disease or cardiac disease.
