A covering strip is wound helically onto a threaded spindle when said threaded spindle rotates and is at the same time unwound at a distance therefrom. Within this distance there is a machine part which engages into the threaded spindle, moves linearly from said spindle and is provided with an internal thread, for example the support of a lathe. In the region of this machine part, the covering strip is guided via a lifting-off device, constructed as a sliding guide, having chamfered guide surfaces. The covering strip protects the threaded spindle against contamination, and the sliding guide allows the protective cover to have a small structural height.
