In order to improve the spray distribution in an emergency cooling system for the core of a reactor pressure vessel, the spray nozzles (6) are arranged vertically in bores of the inwardly curved reactor core head (3). The distribution system (5) is accordingly arranged above the reactor core head and is supported thereon. The apertures for the lead wires (4) are located in the head (1) of the reactor pressure vessel. The emergency cooling system thus constructed is easy to assemble and can also be retrofitted in already existing installations. <IMAGE>
