The forceps (1, 2) is used to compress a length section of a vessel (23) having a small diameter by means of clamping jaws (4, 5) and thereby to expel the blood from this length section. On compression, a strip (10) engages with a groove (9) in which the vessel (23) lies. The clamping jaws (4, 5) are divided over their lengthwise extension. Along the division line, parts (8, 10) of the clamping jaws (4, 5) can be removed from the remainder of the forceps, so that the length section of the vessel is partially exposed at these sites. This exposed portion (25) of the length section is isolated from the remaining vessel (23) and is available for treatment, e.g. for cutting open and inserting a prosthesis (24) and for suturing (22). <IMAGE>
