<p>A number of rows of used tyres side by side and mounted on sleeves fixing them to separate tensioning cables are stacked alongside and one above the other to form a massive boom which is sufficiently flexible to follow the wave motion of the sea without letting oil slicks escape beyond its boundaries. The individual tyres are clamped together by rubber and metal rings at their beading. Lower rows are ballasted to obtain required immersion depth. Not only is maintenance of oil slick thickness at level allowing rapid decomposition methods to be used ensured but also ever increasing numbers of used tyres can be put to good use avoiding further ecological contamination by their dumping, burning etc.</p> |
