The invention relates to the use of egg membranes (amnion and allantoid membranes) and the umbilical cord of allogenic and xenogenic origin, both in an unmodified and modified form, in surgical operations for covering over or covering up and for strengthening fragile tissue and for preventing suture inadequacy, in particular in the case of hollow organs and parenchymatous organs, for the prophylaxis of fusion, for covering skin and mucous membrane defects, for use in plastic surgery for filling of cavities or for rebasing, and also for coating joint surfaces. Fixing can be carried out using sutures or with biological bonding substances, in the form of fibrin, collagen or elastin. The egg membranes can be enzymatically or chemically macerated on the subsequent application side and, if appropriate, completely sulphated by vaporising with concentrated sulphuric acid in vacuo at room temperature. Embryonic connective tissue, blood vessels and outer skin are preparatively separated from the umbilical cord, used or further processed. Adaptation to allogenic or xenogenic histocompatibility antigens is achieved during vital preservation by the use of organ extracts from organ or cell tissues with species- or individual-specificity of the recipient. This procedure is also used for adaptation of cell cultures and for planned organ transplants.
