The control and recording of the composition of a mixture of materials on a conveyor (5) is effected by monitoring the proportion of at least one constituent of the mixture and feeding a signal to an integrating unit (9). The integrating unit includes two integrators (11) and (12) of the time block (successive time periods) and sliding stack (overlapping time periods) type, respectively. One of these integrators is selected to send a control signal to regulate the rate of supply of the constituent to the mixture to ensure a desired proportion is maintained. The materials fed by respective supply means (1,3 and 2,4) are different coals, the property monitored (by means 7) is ash content and the automatic regulation is of the supply means (1,3) for one of the coals.
