PURPOSE:To perform the purification of exhaust gas in a favorable manner by a method wherein in the titled device adopted to remove the clogging of a filter by a combustion gas from a heater, a completely burned part of the combustion gas is supplied into an exhaust gas passage only at the time of complete combustion of the heater and an incompletely burned part of the combustion gas generating at the time of incomplete combustion of the heater is supplied into an air intake passage for re-combustion. CONSTITUTION:A porous filter 4 is provided in the exhaust gas passage 3 in an engine 1 and first and second communication passages 9 and 10 for supplying the combustion gas from a heater 5 into exhaust gas passage 3 and an air intake passage 2 are provided on the upstream side of the filter 4. When the engine is operated in a predetermined operation zone, the heater 5 is operated by a control circuit 18 to thereby generate the combustion gas. In this case, the passage 9 is held closed while the passage 10 is held open by a valve 11 until a predetermined time lapses, in order to supply an unburned part of the combustion gas from the heater 5 into the air intake passage 2 and when the complete combustion condition of the heater 5 is reached, a valve 11 is switched to the condition shown by the broken line so that the passage 10 is closed while the passage 9 is opened and the high temperature complete combustion gas is introduced into the passage 3 to thereby burn the particle component of the combustion gas trapped by the filter 4. |
