The invention relates to a method for detecting structural defects and material defects in the sidewalls of motor vehicle tyres, in particular constrictions, blisters and undulations. In the method, a motor vehicle tyre is clamped on a rim device, subjected to a constant internal air pressure and set rotating uniformly. So that it is possible using such a measuring method to eliminate the disturbing influences which falsify measurement of the actual defects of the strength carrier and yet to obtain information on the fabric layer, it is proposed according to the invention that at least one of the tyre side walls is pressed in with a constant compression/jounce, that the pressure fluctuations are measured and that the structural defects of the tyre determined thereby are classified by size and/or direction. In this case, the device for carrying out this method is characterised in that there is arranged next to at least one side wall (20) of the tyre (7) at least one pressure device (25a, 25b) which can be moved in the direction of the axis (27) of rotation of the tyre (7) and has a roller (2a, 2b) mounted in a freely rotatable manner, at its end assigned to the side wall (20) of the tyre (7). <IMAGE>
