According to the invention, the oxygen partial pressure in the cavity is kept very low, for example less than 10<-4>, as a result, for example, of filling with noble gas or evacuation, in hollow bodies which are to be monitored, for example multiple-pane insulating glass windows. Damage to the hollow body, for example glass breakage, results in a rise in the O2 in the insulating gas and this rise is detected by a component which is fitted in and/or on the hollow body and which contains an oxygen sensor (heater wire) and, if necessary, activates an alarm.
