Bituminous emulsions mfr. in continuous process - by mixing bitumen with mineral emulsifier, colloidally milling then diluting with water

Bituminous emulsions are prepd. by executing a continuous cycle of steps consisting of (a) first mixing bitumen with an aq. suspension of a mineral emulsifier of concn. 30-50%, in proportion to give the pre-mixt. a viscosity of 100-250 tenths of a mm (ASTM-D-217); (b) forming a finely divided conc. emulsion by treating the mixture in a colloidal mill; and (c) mixing the conc. emulsion with water sufficient to bring the viscosity to 300-500 tenths of a mm. The emulsions are used as protective coatings in building construction and in industry in general, e.g. for impermeabilising sound proofing etc. The process can be effected continuously rather than batchwise as in prior art, with the cost saving associated with large scale prodn.
