The mechanism is intended for surface treating components (a) by vibration in an abrasive (b). A housing (1) on a resiliently supported frame (4) has a driven vibrator unit (3) and a rotatably driven horizontal drum (9) in the housing. The drum vibrates with the housing and has an opening (17) in its wall, to receive the components into separate compartments (12) circumferentially spaced at the drum periphery. The drum may be contained in a concentric cylindrical housing (1), with a narrow gap between them. The compartments may be arranged in parallel axial rows, each forming a replaceable unit.
