Process for the preparation of chlorinated hydrocarbons

A process for the selective preparation of chlorinated hydrocarbons, in which an alkane having two or more carbon atoms, chlorine and, if appropriate, a source of molecular oxygen is brought into contact in the vapour phase at a temperature above 275 DEG C in the presence of a catalyst composed of a zeolite. The process is suitable for the preparation of vinyl chloride from ethane.
