Absorbable surgical thread prodn. from cellulose - by oxidn. with nitrogen oxide(s) followed by treatment with protophilic solvent

Absorbable surgical threads are prepd. by oxidising cellulose threads with nitrogen oxides, treating them with a protophilic solvent for 1-2 hrs at room temp. then holding them at 70-90 deg.C for 1-2 hrs. The cellulose threads can be composed of cotton, flax, viscose, polynose etc., and can have a wide range of thickness and levels of additives. The protophilic solvent is (i) a 2-10 wt.% soln. of an ionic cpd, esp. NaCl, CaCl2, Ca acetate or acetic acid (ii) a 2-10 wt.% aq. soln. of a polyhydroxy cpd. selected from glycerol, penterythritol mannitol, sorbitol, glucose or sucrose, or (iii) an organic solvent which is DMF, DMSO or DMA. The threads have increased strength and reduced tendency to swell in water. They are useful in medicine, biology and veterinary practice.
