An EVOH copolymer blend extrudable to produce films of uniform caliper and excellent oxygen barrier properties is compounded from 80 to 95 percent of an ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer resin and 5 to 20 percent of a plasticizing agent (percentages being by weight of the blend). Aromatic sulfonamides are desirably utilized as plasticizers, and superior composite films including a layer of the plasticized EVOH are produced by melt extrusion processes. The EVOH has a molecular weight range of 15,000 to 30,000 and a melting point range of 163 to 191 DEG C. The plasticizer, which is capable of intermolecular hydrogen bonding with the EVOH, has a melting point below 204 DEG C.
