The heat exchanger works between a heat store material and a heat carrying fluid of different densities. It has cellular walls (7) in the store material and a channel (9) to circulate fluid and communicate with the well openings. The heat store material and fluid do not mix and are not soluble. The store material is less dense than the fluid and the well openings are directed downwards. There are top and bottom walls (2,3) with the walls (8) of the wells (7) forming part of an enclosure and having good heat conducting properties.
