A process is proposed for forming a covering layer on a substrate, such as split leather, which covering layer has properties such as a fine grain-like surface profile, transparency and gloss, which are specifically intended for grain leather coloured with aniline dyes. It is a discontinuous process, in which a female mould fitted on a displaceable plate is used as the compression mould. A first layer is applied to this female mould by spraying and, after drying, forms a transparent, coloured polyurethane film; after this, a second layer of material, containing a pigment, is applied on top of the said first layer and, after drying, forms a coloured, opaque pigment-polyurethane film. On this second covering layer, then the substrate is applied, after which a treatment in the oven is carried out and finally the laminate thus formed is removed from the female mould.
