PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound easily, in high purity, in the form of a solution, by halogenating 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoic acid in a solvent obtained by mixing an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent and an aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent at a specific ratio. CONSTITUTION:The titled compound is prepared by halogenating 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoic acid with a thionyl halide such as thionyl chloride in the presence of a catalyst such as N,N-dimethylformamide in a solvent obtained by mixing (i) an aliphatic hydrocarbon having a boiling point of 50-200 deg.C (e.g. hexane, heptane, etc.) and (ii) an aromatic hydrocarbon having a boiling point of 70-200 deg.C (e.g. benzene, toluene, etc.) at a ratio of 85-95vol% to 15-5vol%.
