In the arrangement for supporting upright articles in bookcase shelves, at least one strip 4, 5, 6 of brush material is secured along the entire width of a shelf 2, 3 between the front edge and back edge of the shelf, and at least in the top of the shelf space, and the relatively stiff bristles 7 are directed towards the shelf space so that some of the stiff bristles 7 are pressed backwards or to the side of the top or bottom edge, respectively, of the article when such an article is placed in the shelf space at right angles to the bookcase, so that the bristles 7 thus hold the articles 1 vertically and prevent them from moving sideways. <IMAGE>
