<p>A cutting-off tool for the products of a multistrand continuous casting installation is mounted on a movable supprot. It can be moved in the direction of the cast product to determine the length to be cut, and perpendicularly to select the strand. The cutting tool may be an oxy-acetylene cutting, a circular saw, or an abrasive disc. Each strand passes devices for measuring the transverse dimensions, temp. and length. These are fed to a computer which determines where the cut must be made, relative to a fixed origin. The cutter is positioned relative to the strand, and clamped on to it to synchronise motion while cutting. This method enables lengths of cast strand to be cut in rapid sequence, without returning the cutting tool to a fixed position after each cut. The computer may be programmed to cut off constant weights of metal if strand dimensions vary, or to cut constant lengths if they are consistent.</p> |
