The invention relates to a device for the automatic plunge-cutting of an edge groove (49) in a spectacle lens (17), comprising a spectacle-lens retaining and rotating part (4, 6-8, 8', 9-11, 13-16, 18, 19, 35), a grinding-tool drive part (40, 41, 56, 58, 59, 34), a positioning part (2, 2', 3, 3', 4, 5, 5', 8, 8', 13, 26, 27, 27', 28, 29), a control part (9, 55, 31', 54, 52, 42, 43, 43', 26) for the speed of rotation of the spectacle lens, a grinding-pressure adjusting part (33) and a part (30, 9, 40, 31, 5', 3', 32, 26, 58, 55, 55', 59) for switching the device off in the event of disruption. Irrespective of the ability and experience of the operator and of the shape or contour of the individual spectacle lenses, said device makes it possible to plunge-cut in each case an edge groove (49) of uniform depth and width into in each case a predetermined portion of any spectacle lens, with the result that the fitting of the machined spectacle lenses is improved considerably. <IMAGE>
