The device has a screwdriver (1) and means for setting a defined direction of rotation and a defined torque. By a pulse-generator wheel (3) arranged in a rotary manner in the screwdriver (1), two pulses are produced which are converted in a timing circuit into a first and a second signal limited per unit of time. When the signals limited per unit of time are present simultaneously, the screwdriver (1) is switched off via a switching element. This ensures that the screws to be released are unscrewed or just loosened only by a certain amount. The comparison of the pulses with time signals guarantees that the screwdriver is switched off only after the screws are actually released.
