A process for absorbing sulphuric acid in flue gases by admixing a particulate absorbent such as, preferably, finely ground lime powder to the flue gases which are fed to a heat exchanger to cool them comprises, according to the invention, spraying the absorbent into the flue gases in a defined zone upstream of the heat exchanger and thoroughly mixing the absorbent with the flue gases, the absorbent having a sufficiently low temperature to form a cloud of relatively cold particles which are uniformly distributed and act as nuclei of condensation to precipitate the sulphuric acid prior to coming into contact with the heat exchanger. As a result, corrosion phenomena and blockage of the heat exchanger are substantially avoided and the constructional costs therefor are considerably reduced. The mixture of flue gases and absorbent is expediently subjected to intensive infrasonic vibrations during the flow to and through the heat exchanger, as a result of which the admixture is promoted and permanent precipitates in the heat exchanger are prevented. |
