A system preferably suitable for controlling the mass flow of fuel to a power unit (10) has a variable metering device (12) and a positive displacement pump (11) to which fuel is fed under pressure by an auxiliary pump (13). The pump (11) delivers fuel in a quantity which exceeds the requirement of the power unit, and excess fuel from the pump (11) is fed back to its inlet side via an injector device (14) which responds to the pressure drop (DP) across the metering device (12). The device (14) controls the mass flow flowing back with the aid of a control sleeve (18), the position of which is set in accordance with the pressure drop (DP) and the force acting via a spring (22). The force of the spring (12) is regulated by a piston (23) which responds to an auxiliary pressure (Ps) controlled by a valve (30) which in turn responds to the pressure drop (DP). The spring (22) and the piston (23) allow precise control of the mass flow flowing back with rapid response to changes in the pressure drop (DP). <IMAGE>
