The ethers of 3-(4-methyl-3-cyclohexen-1-yl)butanol (I) are useful novel perfumes having powerful, adhering fragrance notes. <IMAGE> R = linear, branched, saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon radical (C1-4). 3-(4-Methyl-3-cyclohexen-1-yl)butyraldehyde is used as a starting material for the preparation of the novel terpene ethers (I). This is a) reduced using a complex metal hydride, for example sodium borohydride or lithium aluminium hydride, to give 3-(4-methyl- 3-cyclohexen-1-yl)butanol, which b) is reacted with a lithium alkyl or a Grignard compound to give the alcoholate, which c) is reacted with a halohydrocarbon (RX) or a dialkyl sulphate (R2SO4). The perfumes thus obtained can impart stimulating odour variations to perfume compositions. The amounts to be employed for this purpose are 1 - 50 % by weight. |
