An exercising machine includes a pair of inclined guide tracks on each of which a foot-supporting member is arranged to slide frictionally, and the foot-supporting members are interconnected by an elongate flexible tension-bearing element, specifically a flat strap, which slides frictionally over stationary guides. The machine allows a user to simulate the exercise obtained while climbing stairs: the user stands with one foot on each footsupporting member, and, by shifting his weight from one foot to the other, causes the foot-supporting members to rise and fall alternately, with the work done by the user being dissipated by the friction between the strap and the stationary guides. The use of a friction arrangement in which the rubbing surfaces are biased together by the user's weight gives the novel result that the frictional resistance is automatically increased for heavier users.
|
